Temping for a Living

March 6, 2011 | Author: | Posted in Careers

For over ten years I was registered with quite a few job temp services. Starting over from open heart surgery, I was healed up and ready to go to work. I was willing and able to get my feet in the door. And start earning my way and building a reputation as a good trustworthy team member. My first goal was to demonstrate, that I was trainable and capable to get the job done. In three years time I gained a lot of knowledge about different operating procedures and systems that make a business run successfully.

It was time for me to get myself together. I locked myself into the classroom, studying a mixed media of business communication, business math and early 1990′s software training. I focused on more skills training. Due to going in and out of hospitals, and waiting for doctors to make their decision on repairing my floppy micro valve. I decided to group my studies to certificate programs so that I had something to show.

Temp services had no problem with finding me entry level jobs. One moment I was a file clerk with an insurance company, then a shipping and receiving clerk. I worked in loss prevention with a security firm for a art gallery. Taking inventory of limited edition serial graphic art. My goal of making and building a strong work ethic was paying off.

I took an assignment setting appointments for a professional chimney sweeper, and made my best money ever. I knew absolutely nothing when I walked in the contractor’s door. At the orientation I was educated about the business practice and the company’s first-rate experience to handle all chimney-related situations. From debris removal to masonry repairs, and replacement of old parts and screens. I was trained to call people and set them an appointment for a free inspection. I felt I was asking people for a job interview. Unless they already had the chimney cleaned, there was little negativity. I was not asking if they wanted to buy a timeshare or push a get rich scam. This was honest hard work they did, and they where proud of there work, and my tone on the phone reflected that.

When is it time for you to get back to work?, When a spot opens up. Do not be to proud to start at a entry level position. You did it once before and you will knock the walls down again, because you are capable and strong and you get the job done. If you prosper well a new company may reward you, with it’s hopes of a long future.
