I never said no to work in the past, and I pulled plenty of guard duty. Someday you will too, when paying rent and eating separate you from living on the concrete and begging for spare change. Yes you can choose to stand in a 7-11 for the same $8 and change a hour. Until some person whose choice is crime sticks a large frame automatic in your face. And the fact you might be like me, physically limited. Today we can push a hand held device and help is on its way.
Night cleaner standby is a standard chore for security officers working high rise office buildings. You have to keep about three doors ahead of the cleaners and rubbernecking to make sure they only remove trash bags. And then spot check their trash and hope your brain can pick up anything of value in an abstract blend of daily office waste. You will be given a set of keys, and if you’re lucky the doors will have matching numbers. A waste basket outside an office means keep out, which means you too.
Your watch commander will brief you on policies on each site you work. In my experience there are no two posts alike. Office buildings that are one company let security and night cleaners take all the spare fruit home on Fridays. An office building that has different business operations will hire guards to patrol parking area. Small start ups I have seen do their own cleaning at first. If they do hire a cleaning crew it’s during the day, and when the business owner or office workers are present.
I stayed in the protection of a construction site office trailer. I was assigned to a railroad site. They where just breaking the ground on a large new office building. They had open sections of the ground with four or five foot drops. They placed blinking warning lights around these holes. I had a nice flash light, but the project manager had built a wooden deck around his office trailer with a ramp. And you could see the whole project from this vantage point. I had a radio and heat and a phone. It was plenty dark and even though I had my flashlight it was too dangerous to step foot out of the protection of the office trailer; at night my guard shack.
The office trailer had a chain link fence, blocking anyone from the adjacent street. The other end of the lot must have been three miles to a far away street. Urban night crawlers still used this vast dirt field for travel. If anyone fell down one of the holes they where drunk, stupid or blind. There was a 24 hour supermarket across from the trailer office, that offered some light. And every hour a train blew by loud and proud. I kept myself safe first. The best strategy for this post was look out from the safety of the office trailer. Observe and report don’t be a hero.
